Meredith Bell has worked for Des Moines Public Schools since 2011. She loves getting to know the students, staff, parents and families in the Hanawalt community. She is thankful for her experiences teaching at Central Campus High School Intensive English Language Center and Merrill Middle School before coming to Hanawalt.
English Language Learners (ELL) is a program supporting students in language objectives in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. There are more than 12 languages spoken in the Hanawalt community, and more than 100 languages spoken in the households that make up DMPS! Hanawalt is delighted to hold a culturally rich and diverse population, where every student has a story. Jill DeLancey joined the Hanawalt Staff in 2017 as the Reading Interventionist after being home with her two children for five years. Prior to that, she was a classroom teacher for 17 years in San Antonio, Iowa City and Johnston. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa, a Master’s Degree and Reading Endorsement from Viterbo University, and a Talented and Gifted Endorsement from Morningside College. Throughout her teaching career, she has taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades and loves teaching reading. In her free time, she loves traveling, biking, running with her dog, reading and spending time outside with her husband and two children, who both currently attend Hanawalt.
Deb was born in Michigan and lived in Maryland before moving to Iowa where she graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy which is now Dowling Catholic High School. She has a Bachelor of Arts education from Simpson College in both Physical and Elementary Education. Prior to Des Moines Public Schools, she worked for Principal Financial Group and Meredith Corporation. Deb started with the district in 2001 in the Learning Supports Program and has been Hanawalt’s Office Manager since 2006. She lives in West Des Moines with her husband Greg and they have three daughters and four grandchildren.
Eric Lovell grew up in Story City, Iowa until he moved to Des Moines as a teenager. He graduated from Dowling High School and Iowa State University. He is married and has four children. Mr. Lovell has enjoyed teaching at Hanawalt for many years. Working with students at Hanawalt has been, and continues to be a delight.
Scot is bringing over twenty years of experience in education to Hanawalt, with the last 12 being in the Des Moines Public School District. His educational journey started in his hometown of Denison, IA, where he taught elementary for 10 years. His tenure in Des Moines has consisted of teaching assignments at Goodrell and Harding Middle Schools, and most recently spent a two of years an an Instructional Technology Coordinator for the district. He is excited to work with students and staff as Hanawalt’s first Media Technology Teacher. He is an alumi of the University of Northern Iowa, where he met his wife. He is a father of 4 boys that have all been made to be die-hard fans of the Chicago Cubs.

Mother of Maggie Thompson and is the past PTA President for Hanawalt Elementary. She has a
BSE in education and has worked with Americorps in conjunction with the Des Moines Public School system to help kindergarten through 3rd graders improve reading and math skills. She is s a full time substitute teacher at Hanawalt and enjoys all the different roles she does to help students.
My name is Valerie Wilcox. I serve as the instructional coach for Hanawalt Elementary School. I have been teaching for 15 years, and this is my second year at Hanawalt. The majority of my career has been in Des Moines teaching at Findley, Edmunds, and Lovejoy. In addition to teaching for Des Moines Public Schools, I have taught in Hoover City, Alabama. I earned my bachelors degree in Elementary Education from The University of Iowa and my masters degree in Education from Viterbo University.
I have been the school nurse here at Hanawalt since 1995. I graduated from the University of Iowa with my BSN. I have one daughter who also graduated from Iowa and is working in Ames. I obviously love being here at Hanawalt and working with our students, staff, and parents.
