Lyndsey Pritchard is beginning her first full year teaching. She graduated from The University of Northern Iowa in December of 2016 and joined the Hanawalt team in January as the teacher in our cluster classroom. She has her degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education Strategist II. Lyndsey loves working with students with different abilities and figuring out how they learn, so she can adapt her teaching to work best for them! When she is not at school, Lyndsey enjoys spending time with her mom, dad, sister and her (almost) husband. She is huge animal lover with a dog (Florence) and cat (Kayton).
Lorna Christensen has been teaching at Hanawalt since 2006. Professionally, she has a master’s degree in reading education and undergraduate degrees in Special Education and K-6 Classroom. She began teaching for the Des Moines Public Schools in August of 1998. She has taught kindergarten, first grade, reading and special education for the Des Moines School District. Lorna lives on a farm by Adel. She has three adult sons. Her oldest son, Joe is married. Joe and Kim have 2 sons named Tommy and Jake, whom she, as grandma, loves to spoil. Her second son, David, works for Broadlawns Hospital. Her youngest son, Jason, is employed at Wells Fargo. Some of her hobbies include quilting, gardening and singing in her church choir.
Michelle has worked in the district for nine years and this will be her second year as a Special Education Consultant. She provides support to four buildings in the district this year. Prior to working as a consultant, she taught special education and worked with students in grade K-5. Outside of school she has two children that keep her busy with all of their school activities!
Bailea Pakkebier is a Speical Education teacher and is new to Hanawalt this school year. She grew up outside of Chicago and graduated from Central College in Pella, Iowa. In her free time, she likes to play the trombone, run, and travel the world. She is looking forward to getting to know all of her students this school year.
Angela Smith is beginning her 16th year teaching special education in Des Moines. This will be her 1st year at Hanawalt. Angela has also taught at South Union Elementary and Stowe Elementary. She has also taught in Colfax, Iowa and at Meskwaki Settlement School in Tama, Iowa. Angela is married and has 2 children and 4 step children. When not at school she enjoys spending time with her family. She loves the Chicago Cubs and is a Cyclones fan.
Terry Thomas is a Special Ed. Associate. Terry has been at Hanawalt since August 1999. She has over thirty years’ experience working with individuals of all ages who are special needs. She has a Bachelors Degree in American Studies. She is married and has two children. Her children are both Hanawalt graduates.
Vikki has been at Hanawalt over 16 years and simply couldn’t imagine herself at any other school! Vikki has had the privilege to learn many things about herself while working with students as a special needs associate.
Vikki attended DMACC where she focused on early childhood education. Vikki’s greatest rewards from her position are watching the children become independent thinkers and learning alongside each gifted student. Vikki feels Hanawalt has some of the best educators in the world. Outside of the regular school day, she continues to focus on children and their educational experiences by providing social community learning.
