Hanawalt has Published Poets

Congratulations are in order for several students from Hanawalt! Mrs. McConathy, our ALP Consultant, recently did a poetry unit with her students and sent their poems in to a poetry writing contest. Several of them have been selected to be published in the Young American Poetry Digest for 2023. Mrs. McConathy  and Hanawalt are very proud of these students and can’t be more excited for all 28 of them. Hanawalt will soon be getting a free book with our published authors for check out.  In a letter from Expressive Education, the company that publishes Young American Poetry Digest, it states that “These students submitted poetry that was well written for their age.” The publication is in its twenty-ninth year and was designed to share our youth’s talents with others and provide publishing opportunities for young poets.

Poems were selected by a panel of educators who evaluated the overall quality of the poem based on the student’s age and grade level, and determined by:

• Creativity
• Age-appropriate language
• Sensory/figurative images
• Structure
• Poetic techniques
